Biligirirangas Hill : A range of Hills
in the South-east of Yelandur. The palace derives
its name from the temple of Biligirirangaswamy
a shrine of great antiquity, situated at a height
of 5091 ft. in a higest point on the hill. It
is a hill resort with great potential.
Somanathapur : Somanathpur
is a small village directly to the east of Mysore
City on the left of the Cauvery River. It is
38 Kms from Mysore, 138 kms from Bangalore and
32 kms from Srirangapatna by Road. The Keshava
Temple here was built in 1268 A.D.
The temple is built in the center of a large
enclosure with the Mahadwara facing east and
is built on a platform (plinth) of about 3ft.
high. It consist of a Navaranga (Dancing Hall)
with three Garbhagudis (Sanctum Sanctorum) on
south, west & north by Sukanasis (vestibules).
The three Vimanas for the three shrines is in
the shape of a 16 pointed star. The Hoysala
Temple is for the remarkable beauty and freshness
of its ceiling domes. An image of Venugopala
standing about 62 ft. high is installed in south
cell. The west cell is installed with a Vishnu
image and the north cell has got the Janardhana
image. Outside the temple to the North-east
of the Mahadwara stands a large grey stone pillar
more than 30 ft. high. The Hoysala temples are
known for their sculptures and ornamentation.
Melkote : A celebrated sacred
town built on the rocky hills named Yadugiri,
where the great exponent of visistadvaita philosophy
Ramanuja lived. The Chellapillai temple dedicated
to Krishna & Narasimha temple constructed
on the very summit of the rock are some of the
striking edifices worthy of notice.
Tipu`s Palace : About 150 yards
east of the Ranganatha Temple is now to be seen
the mound and ruined wall of the Lal Mahal which
was once a magnificient palace inhabited by Tipu.
